Questions about tampons?

Hi. I’m 13 years old and my next period is supposed to come on the day I leave for vacation. I was planning on using the Tampax Radiant Regular Tampons. I have been practicing inserting an empty not used tampon applicator and I can do it pretty well. But my flow has been super light The last few periods. Not enough to soak a pantiliner for a whole day. I don’t wanna have them hurt to take out but were going to be swimming and I don’t wanna stain/leak. What should I do?

  • You can’t use tampons.

To begin with it’s recommended that someone your age doesn’t use tampons as you’re at higher risk of TSS, but if your flow is this light then you certainly can’t use tampons (least of all regular absorbency) – it won’t just hurt but will increase vaginal ulceration caused by tampons drying-out vaginal tissues, this ulceration gives TSST-1 toxins responsible for TSS a more direct route into your body so poses higher risks. Furthermore rayon tampons like Tampax also pose a high risk of TSS and other risks.

    Get a menstrual cup.

Cups are internal like tampons but far safer and more hygienic so no risk of TSS, vaginal infections, increased cramps, increased bleeding, or dioxin as with tampons – this also makes them more convenient as they can be worn for 12 hours, with any flow, before your period, overnight, and no need to alternate with pads. Cups are more comfortable and better for swimming as nothing shows outside your body and they don’t leak like tampons. Just opt for a small brand like MeLuna or Ladycup.
