Scared to play football?

Well, I want to start playing football. (American football), and my friend is trying to get me to start going, but the problem is that I’m scared to bring it up with my parents because if I do, my dad will tell me to do all this stuff. – Getting the coaches number, having the coach call my dad and my dad most likely telling him not to push me hard, or something else that’ll get me looked at as a ‘wimp’, and ultimately never given a chance to engage in anything in actual games or truly have fun.

I understand my dad is looking out for me, but he embarrasses me all too often, and in general the only time he’ll let me unconsentingly engage in anything is in church, but whenever I want to do something I like, such as sports, or just other general things that he can’t monitor 24/7, its a problem.

Any advice on how I can bring the topic up with him without him immediately blowing my chances?

  • Don’t procrastinate….. Just talk to him and get it over with…. The faster you ask the faster you can start preparing… Good luck..

  • as you say your not scared of injuries, the rest of your fears can be dealt with this way. #1 your preparation- how much film have you watched, did you notice how the good/great receivers didnt get jammed at the line of scrimmage, got seperation and ran clean routes. did you study your teams playbook. knowing the plays when they are called and not guessing means you can just react and not be thinking. ask your coach of game film on the team you are due to play each week. watch their lb’ers and db’s, learn how to find gaps in their zones. being prepared also means did you run sprints for overall speed, ran for distance so your stamina is good enough to last the whole practice or game, when everybody else is tired, your still going strong. as another poster mentioned, use that nervousness to get better, if you were not nervous it would probably mean you didnt care enough, therefore you wouldnt have a chance in you know what of being good. lastly, say these words over and over to yourself, I am out on this field, and the man and team across from me is not going to stop me, my preparation and dedication to my position cant be stopped. maybe for a play here and there, but at the end of the day, me and my team will have beaten you.

  • I highly encourage you to join your school’s football team this upcoming season. It will still not (yet) be too late for you to start playing football.

Remember, the best way to prove yourself is through actions, not words. My best advice for you is to work hard and perform very well in practice every day. In addition, what you need to do this summer is eat healthy, exercise by doing weight lifting, and either jogging or going for a long run every day. If you do these things, you will get faster, stronger, and into better shape, which will greatly improve your chances of convincing your dad to let you play football this upcoming season.

  • All you can do is ask…
