Should 4 month old oven stil have that “new” oven smell?

Our electric fan oven, which is 4 months old now and used every other day, still have traces of that “new” smell, i was wondering if that’s normal? It’s not too strong and when food’s cooking it somewhat masks it but when it’s preheating empty and you walk into the kitchen you can smell it. We’ve done the initial burn off on max temperature for about 1.5 hours and it smelt horrendous and obviously improved considerably since then but hasn’t gone away completely:( It’s not “self-cleaning” so can’t try that.
Appreciate any advice, thank you.

  • yeah, it’s a horrible smell, isn’t it?

The smell is from oils used to coat the various parts during manufacture. There could still be some in the cracks and joins, even on the far side of the oven walls.

Wipe it out with vinegar, letting a little bit go into any joins. Put it on the elements, too, if they are where you can reach them. Remove the bottom plate, if it comes out (in some ovens it’s like a removable crumb tray) and do the back of it and whatever you find under it, too. Don’t forget to do the door just as thoroughly, including the edges.

Then do another burn off, same as before. Leave it longer, maybe 3 hours. Leave windows open and leave the room (or ideally, leave the house).

It will still persist a little. You could do mini-burnoffs every time you use it — preheat by putting it to max temperature then letting it cool down to the temp you need. (Say you need 275, once its full-blast hot, turn the know to a tiny bit over 275: when the light comes on to say it’s heating again, that means it’s dropped down to 275+).
