Since none of you were alive during Sugar Ray Robinson?

How can you say he is that good? … i mean ok what do we have now to compare to boxing? MMA right? and MMA legends ( royce gracie , Tank etc etc ) are not that good if you compare them with fighters of today… if they were fighting now i bet none of them would be ” legends ” same thing with Robinson i think if he fought today he would get beaten .

past boxers didnt have that competition that modern fighters have and past boxers are limited fighting almost only american fighters

the problem with past fighter are they are labelled as ” Legends ” that makes them invincible to people eyes .

so what do you think? do you think past legends of boxing are overated?

Update:

@flash

supplements and power/speed are linked …. Ive tried eating my way to buff up during training but i cant eat more to gain that wieght so good thing there is protien shakes …. stop that protien shakes and you get smaller…. another thing is the techniques of today are superior

the point is put sugar ray robinson here and now and he will get beaten …. do that modern training with robinson and he will perform but with more talented competition i still wouldnt believe he will be ” greatest of all time “

Update 2:

@stone

you should read it first before answering ….. my example is MMA fighters of the past that we actually saw ( because MMA is a young sport )…

READ BEFORE YOU HATE!!!

Update 3:

@stone

i fought robinson = ( bragging that he fought the greatest ) which in turn makes him greater than he actually was and robinson closer to him ( its a fae thing ) …. if you knew a prominent figure you would say something like that too …. thats human nature

  • I can actually say that you posted an interesting question.However,if i may offer some advice.Since you have been a member of this boxing community for quite some time now,it would be in the best interest for yourself to study fighters of the past and read about the politics of their times,size of gloves,rules of boxing and truly study the styles of boxing back then.I’m more then sure you would have a great amount of respect for the great fighter’s in the early 20th century.Good day.

  • I actually was alive and have seen him box, live.

    Past boxers did in fact fight foreign boxers, mostly from Europe.

    It is true that opinions play a big part in comparing people from different eras, and I am inclined to give modern athletes the benefit of the doubt that they can be better than athletes from several years ago.

    In fact when you compare track and field athletes there is only a stop watch and measuring tape, so opinions don’t count.

    In things like boxing it is what you see and think, since comparing common opponents does not give you an accurate picture.

    Some legends are over rated, but today when fighters only fight once or twice a year, they don’t help themselves when comparing careers with guys that fought once a month or more,and they did not have the protection that is present today. That means that guys were saved by the bell at the end of each round and were allowed to continue fighting when today the fights are stopped much sooner.

    The game is not as brutal as it was back then.

    Past boxers had more competition, and more people fought, for longer careers.

    Robinson was beaten then and could lose today, but he was the best I have seen, and that includes today’s fighters.

  • Although supplements, training and offensive & defensive techniques have evolved over the years, the average boxer’s power and speed has not. You put a talented freak of nature like Sugar Ray Robinson in today’s era with today’s trainers, today’s supplements and nutrition plans he would be even better than he was in the 40’s and 50’s, same goes for many other champions of that era and before. SRR is the best pound for pound of all time, hard to call that guy “overrated”.

  • Speak for yourself, You most likely wasn’t a itch in daddy’s pants when I was watching Robinson fight at MSG located then at west 49th street and 7th avenue…nuff said !

  • Yes, I believe SRR was overrated and Mayweather would beat him.

    SRR fought mostly white guys and he fought guys with records like, 20-20, 32-35, 18-23…etc. If Mayweather fought a guy with a record of 30-35 today, everyone would go nuts.

    Different era.

    SRR is overrated, imo. So is Marciano. Probably even more than SRR is

    Source(s): EDIT: The reason I say this guys, if you think of this. The sport of boxing evolves. Mayweather is a product of all the fighters before him. He has ultimate skill and has been trained to beat anyone of all time. His uncle/dad were in the ring with greats and are historians, much like Floyd is. Roger fought SPW, Dad fought SRL. Floyd since a boy has been trained to beat all those guys.

  • lol

    What kind of theory is that? Just because we didn’t see him with our own eyes means he was no good?

    I guess because we didn’t see the holocaust means that Hitler isn’t all that bad? Come on man!!

    There’s plenty of people still alive who saw him box and there is hours worth of footage of his greatest fights, and his welterweight career is yet to be released but will only amplify his legacy when it is. All his opponents honor him as the greatest man they fought. Proof enough for you?

  • i am in agreeance with you on this one

    i’ve always said that past “legends” get their legacies embellished as they get past down through history…

    especially ones without film

    in the case of Sugar Ray however, there is plenty of film, and i’ve watched it….he IS great, you can tell by how easy he moves in and around the ring, and snaps his punches….

    but, its also true that while he was a great athlete, a lot of the athletes he faced were primitive by today’s comparison in many ways…..of course not all, he faced other ATGs…..but many

    if SRR fought today, i think he would still be very good, but not nearly as dominant
