Social Security Benefits?

My dad passed away when I was 16. I will be 18 in two months, but I’m in high school for another year. My mom says she will still be the one to receive the checks when I am 18, is this true?

  • Because she is already receiving benefits payments she will continue to receive the benefit payments.

    Per Social Security:

Three months before your child’s 18th birthday, we will send you a notice that benefits will end at age 18 unless your child is a full-time student at a secondary (or elementary) school. If your child is younger than 19 and still attending a secondary or elementary school, he or she must notify us by completing a statement of attendance that has been certified by a school official. The benefits then
will usually continue until he or she graduates, or until two months after reaching age 19, whichever comes first.

  • Once you turn 18 you can ask social security to be your own payee. You will need to provide them with the info for your own checking/savings account for the money to be deposited in. Keep in mind if you are still living at home with your Mom, she can charge you rent. You don’t get to collect the benefit and get a free ride from Mom. The benefit is intended for your support for things like rent, groceries, utilities, clothes, etc. The benefit will end the month you graduate or turn 19 and 2 months, whichever comes first. You can call or visit social security for more information.

    Collect Survivor benefits.

  • No no after the child turns 18 the death be befits stop but if in school continue for two more years . But if your mom gets his plain ss check that’s a different story also note that when the if the other parent may die that I’f kids are then given to a person other than a grandparent etc the payments Stop at that Age . I am raising my grandchild and my wish is for ( I have legal custody ) them to go with my best freind but then they can’t collect the death benefits anymore since there not related . Isn’t fair but government isn’t

My daughter died and I get death benefits for my grandchildren

  • If you are still in school, you will continue to receive social security survivors benefits until your 19th birthday or you leave school = whichever happens first.

Yes, your mom will continue to be your payee for the benefits and it’s still needs to be used for care.

  • There wont be any more money when you turn 18. The survivor benefit is for a minor child only. Your parent is supposed to get the benefits, not you, and she is supposed to use it to take care of you and the household. It is not spending money. It is to make up for Dad’s income that you lost.

  • Yes, because it’s MINOR benefits. The MINOR benefits go to the guardian. If you don’t want MINOR benefits, they flat out get cut off.
