Someone opened my mail, and read my bank statement. Illegal?

Hey there. So, i’m 15 in the UK and have an under 19s bank account. Every month, my bank statement comes in the mail on the 1st-4th day of the month and I normally have a look and put it in the shredder. But last month, I started using without my Dads permission, and quite frankly, its my card, so I do what I want. But he got really pissed off, and then waited a week, and opened MY mail and read MY bank statement. Also, he worked at the same bank i’m with, for 35 years up until 29, and says he could get one of his friends that still works there to get him a statement of my card, whenever he wants. He says that it isnt, because every month he pays in £20 to the account as my allowance.

Is any of what he is doing illegal?

Thanks in advance!

  • Well, it’s his money to put in the account. Or not.

So “quite frankly” he can stop putting money in. Then you can have a card and “do what you want” with no money.

What does it matter if it’s illegal? You going to call the police over it?

I don’t know exactly how these bank accounts work – but if dad’s name is on it, if you needed dad to open it, if you need dad to keep it – then I would guess it’s not “illegal”.

And “quite frankly” at 15 – attitude or not – you really can’t “do what you want”. Especially if you are counting on dad for the money to do so.

If I were your parent – the source of your money would dry up very quickly – with that attitude.

  • Yes it is illigal bit if he made the account then he could use that against you
