What are the basics of tennis?

I’m interested in joining tennis this year, and to be prepared, I want to learn about the rules, scoring, and any other things. Keep it simple please – pretend you’re explaining the facts to a 6 year old, even though i’m 15. lulz

  • he basics are

points are done in 15 – love

if ur opponent gets the next point its 15-15.. then u get the next one 30-15…. vice versa… who ever hits 40 and then the next point that is a game point….. to get to 1

u can also go into a deuce game if u both get 40- 40, then then someone would have to win the next 2 points to get to advantage 40….and then the next point

    the basic shots are forehands

    backhands one handed or two

    volleys

    drop shots

the serve is what starts the point

u have to keep the ball in the court.. or inside the lines

  • Here is USTA’s “Tennis Welcome Center” web page:

    http://www.tenniswelcomecenter.com/

Here is a “Getting Started” page from the U.S. Tennis Association:

    http://www.usta.com/Play-Tennis/getting_started/

In the page just above, click on “What are the rules?” near the center of the page, in small blue type. That will bring up a PDF file that will give you the basic rules.

If you want to have your own rule book, then look for “Rules of Tennis” or “Friend at Court” books by USTA at the following link:

http://www.ustashop.com/ <– click on “Books” in the left side of the page

“Friend at Court” is my favorite rule book because it has *everything,* plus, it has an index in the back for looking things up. Hmm, looks like “Rules of Tennis” is sold out right now, so “Friend at Court” is going to be the only rule book available at the present time [2 November 2011].

Tennis is a *skill* sport, somewhat like chess, taekwondo, boxing, piano, or something where you have to spend years of effort in order to build up your skill level. If you want to become a strong player, the best way to do that is to take lessons from a good teacher.

If you are looking for a teacher, here are links to three tennis-teaching organizations:

    http://www.uspta.org/

    http://www.ptrtennis.org/

    http://www.mtmca.com/

The web sites above have a function where you can enter your zip code or local area, so that you can find out how to contact any teaching professionals near you.

Sportsmanship might not be #1, but it’s way ahead of whatever is in 2nd place.

Best of luck, hope you have some fun with it along the way 🙂
