Very fulfilling job – working with kids is amazing! – this reason always counters all the cons for me.
You’re NEVER bored – the days go by extremely fast.
Good amount of vacation time – trust me…it’s needed.
For the most part, you’re in control of your classroom/job.
Well respected job by public for the most part.
Generally good benefits.
Union support.
Cons:
Very long work days/weeks – 10+ hours/day, sometimes six days a week, not including bringing work home.
Mental exhaustion on a daily basis by the end of the day.
Low pay when considering the amount of education required to become a credentialed teacher.
Many classroom items will be paid for out of your own pocket – expect hundreds if not thousands per year.
Teachers are often portrayed negatively and blamed for the educational status of the country.
High stress job – demanding parents, difficult students, unrealistic educational expectations from the administration/state (ie. No Child Left Behind), non supportive administrators, etc.

Long relatively useless meetings.

one can enjoy working with little once at the same time you have less working hours at the same time you need to look over finances.
