What Can I Expect as Temp Nurse at a Nursing Home… New Job?

I just got a temp job as an RN for a nursing home filling in about 8 shifts in a month. I will not have typical orientation like regular employees so what is it expected that I do? How can I just “Jump In” without knowing the ways of the place, the employees or the residents? Does anyone have a similar experience?

  • It would be beneficial to request to the nursing home that you want regular orientation. It is very difficult for a temp nurse to just “jump” in when working in nursing homes because some nursing homes staff very minimal. You may in fact be expected to have 60 + residents you are responsible for. So it would be important to go through orientation so you can learn policies and procedures. If you haven’t worked in a nursing home before, then regular orientation is a must. You would want to familiarize yourself with how staff “know” what care a resident needs. Sometimes care plans are not updated, and sometimes there could be changes to orders that have not been put on the MAR. So it would be important to review the current Physician’s Order Sheet, and the MAR. I remember standing at a nurses station, and a resident came past with a family member and the temp nurse was about to give the resident a medication that had been d/c’d. It was never marked on the MAR so she didn’t know. Communication in some nursing homes is better than others.

Another thing important to know is how the nursing home determines code status of residents. Some nursing homes have poor systems, to include expecting staff to search through the medical record. In larger nursing homes, this only further delays time or for people to look in the wrong medical record. Allergies is also another important thing to know how they determine.
