What casual/part-time jobs can you get without work experience in Australia?

I have a friend who has been looking for jobs for some time but with not much luck.

He’s an 18 year old and an international student, and studying Bachelor of Arts at a reputable university. He is academically diligent and has gained excellent marks in school, notably in English where his score is representative of outstanding ability to communicate complex ideas.

However, he has no prior work experience, nor community service experience. Furthermore, I don’t think he has relatives or friends who might be able to provide him with an opportunity. As most people are in looking for their first job, he’s not at all concerned about pay. Of course it is undeniably harder to gain a part time job as a foreigner but I have seen many foreign workers provide service much inferior what he could give, so there is no doubt that he’s qualified.

Now I would like a list, as comprehensive as possible, that shows possible workplaces at which he could try applying for, as well as, any alternative ideas. I will suggest these to him so that he can apply for all of them and hope that a job interview pops up…

  • waiter at casual cafe, restaurants, or supermarket (job types may vary) etc.
  • He is probably best at looking for some sort of labouring job, my advice would be to seek out some employment agencies and get on their books, places like manpower, adecco and there are some smaller ones as well, they do all sorts of work not just labouring jobs but they are the most common.

  • has he got an RSA or Barista certificate? IF not he needs to get those – without any experience those qualifications will be a help.
