A virtue is a good characteristic, a positive personal attribute – like compassion, patience, generosity.
I don’t think it is particular to British English.
Virtue can also refer to the “seven virtues” of chastity, temperance, charity, diligence, patience, kindness, and humility, which are supposed to be the opposite of the “seven deadly sins” – see this article in Wikipedia:
