  • It is the speed (or one of several speeds) at which some part of the machine comes into resonance with the speed of rotation causing vibration levels to build up quite quickly.

    Most commonly this involves one of several vibration modes of the shaft itself and it is the shaft which vibrates in that mode. It is essential to avoid running a machine close to a critical speed and if the machine has to be taken through a critical speed on the way up to (or down from) its running speed then the critical region should be traversed as quickly as possible. Shaft critcal speeds are determined by rotor stiffness and mass distribution and are influenced by bearing and foundation stiffnesses.
