Japan’s Ruling Coalition Secures Parliament in Election Win

TOKYO—Japanese voters granted Prime Minister Shinzo Abe more freedom to pursue his ambitious growth agenda and muscular foreign policy by handing his ruling coalition a landslide victory that is expected to reverberate through Japan’s economy and global financial markets.

Japan is now all but certain to enter a period of political stability, after years of frequent leadership changes and legislative gridlock. Sunday’s vote gave the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and its small coalition partner majority control of Parliament’s upper house, following a December win that put them in charge of the lower house. That ends the “twisted parliament,” or divided government, that had hampered Japan’s leadership on and off for much of the past quarter century.

  • If the party that’s in power is a minority government (as this one was, even with its small coalition partner), it’s very difficult to accomplish much. A ‘landslide victory’ (they won in a big way) gives them a majority, meaning that legislation can be passed even though other parties oppose it.

Yes, a landslide victory = an overwhelming victory.
