They’re just two different approaches to gathering more light than the “naked” human eye can. Refracting telescopes use multiple lenses of glass, a reflector uses a giant mirror. Reflectors are easier to scale up to larger sizes for several reasons, and refractors over 6″ are a real rarity (and also absurdly expensive).
