What should I learn? Boxing or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Boxing will help me get more fit and build up more muscle, but Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will be far more useful in fights and stuff. I’m a pretty small guy and I’m 15 years old. Which do you think would be the best choice for me?

  • Unless you’re planning on boxing as a career, BJJ is definately the better way to go. (Also, don’t underestimate the ability of BJJ to make you fit and add a lot of muscle.)

  • Cage fighting is mixed martial arts. Start off with stand up or jiu jitsu/BJJ. Knowing one part, either standing or ground, will not only get you better conditioning, but will be alot easier with some basics down instead of just jumping into mma. You need to build on that foundation. I recommend training Muay Thai for at least 3 months, THEN jumping into MMA. *AND YES GRACIE JIU JITSU IS ANOTHER NAME FOR BJJ.*

  • Unlike other people who have commented here, I do not think that you should pursue both in parallel. However, you might be able to do that after you’ve invested at least a few years in building a foundation in one of these styles. I suggest that you choose one of them and focus on it. Both are excellent styles, if one can find a good teacher. The following guide will aid you in making the decision that’s most right for you:

  • BOTH!!! UFC champs usually know both. Go for kickboxe, though. Legs are very effective against the untraind, if you’re capable of using them whithout killing yourself you have a big advantage. I went for karate, at first it feels like you couldn’t kill a dying hamster, but after four years i kick butt.
