What to eat during pregnancy?

I’m sick of salads… but unfortunately I cannot have my normal turkey or tuna sandwiches that I used to eat all the time before I became pregnant. I’m out of ideas for what I can have for a healthy lunch. Any suggestions?

  • Hi you can have Tuna they say only 3 small cans a week and turkey is fine as well.
What you can and can’t eat when pregnant does seem confusing to start with but if you follow a few simple rules it should become clear.

    • Cheese – soft mould-ripened or blue cheese should be avoided, i.e. cheese that has a blue vein in it or the type of skin or crust that is found on cheese such as Brie or Camembert. Unpasteurised soft cheeses, such as those made from sheep and goat’s milk are also best avoided.

    • Eggs – you only need to avoid raw or undercooked eggs.

    • All salad dressings that you buy in supermarkets, such as mayonnaise, will have been made using pasteurised egg and are therefore quite safe. Cook eggs until the yolk and white are not runny any more. Be careful about eating “home-made” products such as chocolate mousse and fresh mayonnaise in delis which may contain raw egg.

    • Other dairy products – unpasteurised milk and dairy products made with unpasteurised milk are best avoided as they are more likely to carry bacteria that could give you food poisoning.

    • Paté – all paté should be avoided, whether made from meat, fish or vegetables.

    • Meat and meat products – it’s fine to eat meat, but make sure it is cooked thoroughly and there are no pink or red bits and that the juices run clear, especially if it’s cooked on a barbecue, or as part of a ready meal. Cured meat products, such as Parma ham and salami, also carry a risk and are best avoided.

    • Oily fish – is good for you and your baby but it can contain environmental pollutants. Have no more than two portions of oily fish a week such as mackerel, sardines and trout so you get all the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, but also cut the risk from the pollutants. Limit tuna to no more than two tuna steaks a week or four medium-size cans of tuna a week. Avoid shark, swordfish and marlin altogether because of the high levels of mercury in these fish, which could harm your baby’s developing nervous system.

    • Finally, when you’re handling or preparing food, make sure you follow strict food hygiene guidelines – such as washing your hands, keeping utensils and surfaces clean, using separate utensils for raw meat from those being used for ready-to-eat food, and following cooking and storage instructions carefully.

  • You can really eat almost anything while pregnant. Seafoods are what you really have to watch because of the mercury. You can eat tuna in moderation and turkey is ok to eat anytime. Some things to watch when eating though are…

    1. Fat content (Eat fatty food in moderation)
    2. Msg (Supposedly can cause fetal nervous system problems if consumed too much, eat in extreme moderation)
    3. Deli meats – These are ok to eat as long as they are slightly heated before being given to you. (If you go to Subway or something, ask the attendent to pop your meat in the microwave for 20 secs and then put it on the sandwich) This is because of the threat of listeria on pregnant women.
4.Coffee and caffeine- One cup or can a day is not going to hurt you.
*If you experience constipation during pregnancy, drink one cup of coffee and it should help you pass it. Safer than drugs.
    5. Try to eat a wide variety of foods because the more you eat the more likely your baby will enjoy those foods when they are older.
    6. Carbohydrates should definitely be eaten but try to use a LITTLE bit of moderation because they will really pack on the pounds fast since your metabolism is slowed down some. Proteins, veggies, and fruits are a plus for your baby because they are packed with vitamins and minerals.
    7. Cow milk or soy milk- Either or is good. Some say that 2% is the best but with how much milk you should be drinking everyday along with your prenatal (2-3 cups) the fat in the milk really racks up. It would be best to drink fat free milk so that you can drink as much as you want and not worry about the fat.
Soy milk is great as well especially the “Silk” brands because there is one kind that is LOADED with vitamins and also has DHA in it. This is spectacular for your baby. Dha helps with the nervous and cardiovascular system. Chocolate silk is yummy.

  • You can have tinned tuna, but no more than four medium sized tins per week, due to mercury level in fish. Less than four is safe though. Mix it with a bit of mayonnaise (the pasteurised one you buy in the supermarket. I used to buy the egg-free one just to be on the safe side, but then again I was the most paranoid pregnant woman there ever was…) You can cook your own chicken or turkey and put on your sandwiches. If you are going to eat it cold, it should be eaten within 24 hours of cooking. Make sure your fridge is cold. I used to crave toast with avocado and cheese… Any hard cheese is fine, and Avocado is one of the healthiest snacks around. Contains heaps of omega 3, which is needed for the baby’s brain development. If you eat eggs, omelettes are great. You can add vegies or meat. Just make sure the egg is cooked properly. Make a big batch of healthy soup, and freeze in portions. You can just defrost and have with some toast for an easy lunch.
    All the best xx

  • just make sure you are getting all the foods from the basic food groups

i thought tuna was ok pregnant (was when my wife was pregnant) however she couldnt have shell fish?

roast beef sandwich, ham salad, if its just a sandwich its not going to be too unhealthy unless you have a dripping BLT with lots of mayo.

stop moaning eat what you want (coal, cheese with chocolate, anything you are craving) and dont worry about it because you are going to get fat anyway!
