Air masses are not moved along by winds, but mostly by pressure differences, with winds the result of those pressure differences. Cold air masses are by nature dense and heavy, thus they tend to spread out, moving towards areas of lower pressure and less dense air. The main wind flow over the U.S. is the prevailing westerlies in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere, which in turn can effect the low lever pressure fields and the resultant lower atmospheric winds and air masses.
