What works best for dark circles under the eyes?

I have inheritted my mom’s Mediterranean complexion – including the dark circles under the eyes. The older I get (and more kids I have…LOL) the worse they are getting. There are so many different products but which actually works? How long before you see results? What works best for concealing them? Thanks.

  • A. Dark circles are famously annoying and unfortunately, there’s no way to get rid of them. However, you have 3 basic options for concealing them:

Option 1: Use a proper concealer. Test out the best colors at a department store counter or at Sephora. (Tip: Tell the makeup artist you are looking to correct the undereye circles and are testing several different types before purchase). Choose concealer that’s a shade lighter than your foundation. And if your circles are very dark, go 2 shades lighter. You might be choosing a concealer that’s too light if you are getting a ‘raccoon look.’

    How you get dark circles
Dark circles are caused by one of three primary reasons. Here’s the quick and dirty on which solution works best for each type.

    – Bone structure. If you have deep-set eyes, shadowing contributes to the dark color under the eyes. Your best bet: camouflage. Look for concealers with yellow undertones, which counteract the bluish cast to under-eye circles.

    – Pigmentation. Genetic hyper-pigmentation is the most treatable form of dark circles. Your best bet: Try a lightening cream or talk to a dermatologist about chemical peels or laser resurfacing.

    – Vasculature inflammation. Late nights, allergies and nutritional deficiencies can enlarge the blood vessels beneath the thin under-eye skin. Your best bet: Take care of yourself! Sounds cliché but drink that water, get your beauty sleep, eat a healthy diet and avoid cigarette smoke (easy enough, right?).

you can buy this at Bloomingdale’s or any major department store. But it is expensive but worth it

  • Ice or sliced cucumbers then some cover up

  • AMBIE , it’s great for all dark spots on the body.

  • I have genetic dark circles too and I’ve used DermaBlend for probably about 15 years now, it’s smooth and waterproof. I also use Sheer Cover (from that informercial with Leeza Gibbons, no kidding!) and their coverup/makeup works great.

  • this may be disgusting, but hemorroid medication WILL do the trick since it constricts blood vessels. Trust me, i;ve had to use this many mornings in college.

  • Before you try to treat the circles under your eyes, why not find out the exact cause. Sure you say its from time and having kid and all but there is something very much more specific. You mentioned that it is hereditary. Well there is a whole new field of medicine opening up there too.

Try going to a dermatologist and let her or him take a look. The solution may be so simple that you could be laughing all the way to the meat counter at your supermarket.

Anyway good luck with getting a solution.

  • The Bigger Secret that is Hidden Under the Eyes

Chinese medicine says that dark circles under your eyes or bags under your eyes are a sign of an internal problem, not just a skin problem. If they are dark that indicates toxic blood and the kidneys weakness in filtering your blood. If they are swollen that indicates sluggish filtration of your kidneys.

This can lead to a variety of health problems such as water retention, scanty urine, swollen ankles, fingers and toes and possibly urinary infection.
There are several solutions you can use.

    • Use a chinese kidney activator herbal treatment. This would contain such ingredients as potassium, Juniper berries, Parsley herb, Uva ursi leaves, Dandelion root (diuretic), and Chamomile flowers

    • Change your diet, drink plenty of liquids preferably pure water, organic cranberry juice is good. Reduce your meat and protein consumption, and drink tea, preferably watermelon seed or green, sweetened with black strap molasses.

    • Cleanse the colon.
Remember problems that show on the surface are indicators of problems inside. There are other herbs that can absorb the toxins, serve as diuretics designed for the kidneys, and provide trace minerals to replenish the body.

Oh yeah and another thing. You should get at least 6-8 hours of sleep.

  • Sometimes dark circles are an indicator of allergies. You say they are getting worse as you age. Maybe it has nothing to do with age or children, but developing allergies?

  • You can use a light concealer. Just dont put too much on. Or you can use this eye cream by Stryvechtin.

  • Cucumber slices

  • I’m not sure about any products but the best thing i find is to cut thin slices of cucumber and pop them into the freezer for a few minutes. also cold used tea bags help the puffiness. hope that helps

  • Cucumber slices – put the slices on the dark circles. You will see results very quickly.

  • You may want to try a good skin bleaching cream such as Ambi if you have not all ready. I am not sure about your ethnicity, but there are many gentle skin bleaches out there now. If you are having problems with puffiness as well, Preparation H cream works very well! I know it sounds odd, but it actually works!

  • I have dark circles also,I use Olay’s eye lightener and eye repair. It helps out a lot but i don’t think my circles will ever go away.

  • GO TO WALGREENS AND GET SOME ‘SUDDEN CHANGE’. I HEAR THAT IT WORKS….LET ME KNOW BECUASE I HAVEN’T TRIED IT YET.

  • Put on some tea bags, when they are cold of course, help me,have the same problem

  • I empathize with you! 🙂 I don’t have a Mediterranean complexion (I’m actually quite pale), but I do have dark under-eye circles. Some of my relatives have them, so it might be genetic. Also, they get worse when I have a flare up of allergy/sinus problems, or if I don’t get enough sleep. But mainly I think it’s just overly-thin under eye skin, and there’s nothing I can do to change the way my genes made me. 🙁

HOWEVER, I’ve found some makeup that hides it well. I used to use Physicians Formula (a rather expensive brand). They had a double-ended item that looked like one of those lip glosses where you apply it with a sponge-tipped stick. Except the product inside was a concealer cream. One was yellow (a color that counteracts the blue-ish circles), and one was a skin tone (which you could then apply over the yellow if you wish). After you used one or both of the concealers, you could then apply for favorite face powder over your eye area and whole face, and everything blended in nicely.

I used that until my mom introduced me to Cover Girl “CG Smoothers”, an all-day hydrating liquid makeup. It supposedly is used like a foundation, but I use it just under my eyes. It’s very thin and easy to apply, and doesn’t get as wrinkly or as cakey after all day, unlike the Physicians Formula item, which sometimes did. The CG Smoother seems to really conceal my under-eye circles, especially after I follow up with the facial powder, as I explained above. Another good thing about the Smoother is that it’s reasonably priced, and comes in a variety of shades for all skin tones. 🙂

BTW, my current fave face powder is Neutrogena loose powder. I used to use Corn Silk, but I can’t find that brand of face powder anymore.

  • well i used to always have circles under my eyes(everyone told me i had a black eye or eyes all the time)so i went to sleep 1/2 hour earlier and it really showed,make-up makes them worse!!!

  • Cold chamomille teabags.
