What would be my line of argument for this essay question!? Need help :(?

Ok so i have my first ever university essay to do and i have absolutely no clue how to start it, what to talk about within it or what my line of argument should be. I am getting so stressed out about it 🙁 i just want to get it over and done with. The essay question is..

Explain the difference between the SociologicaI Imagination, as described by C. Wright Mills and common-sense explanations. Then through the use of examples show how each approach would explain Sexuality.

Ok so i understand the first part, that i have to explain the difference but then what .. do i have to think of different factors to analyse using sociological imagination and common sense and how they explain the topic of sexuality.. ahh i don’t get it :'(

  • Sexuality can be understood as part of the social life of humans, governed by implied rules of behavior and the status quo. C. Wright Mills describes the type of insight offered by Sociological imagination as a form of sociology. Common sense is a basic ability to perceive, understand, and judge things which is shared by nearly all people.

One discipline implies that through complex and sometimes unforeseen events, the interactions of people have consequences and will always remain unpredictable. The other that through experience we can determine the outcome of interaction using past experiences as a guide.

While providing examples of how each approach explains sexuality would not be too hard, that would depend on the use of the word. Is it to mean the sexual interactions between people or a sexual identity that an individual assigns to themselves or others.

For example, you could see two men hug in a crowd and come to the conclusion(according to C Wright Mills) that the two men are either gay or friends. At this point we can apply likely outcomes based on the social behaviors and the impact these may have on a social group or even within a society. But common sense tells us that the two men are really insignificant and not worth drawing conclusions. Two people interacting within an entire society is of no importance unless these two were found to have created or are following a trend. Common sense tells us trends are important.

Hope this help, a really hard assignment:)
