What would you consider to be the worst club decisions in AFL ?

My worst would be the Brisbane Lions…. years of Chris Scott, Brad Scott and Voss playing shoulder to shoulder to bag 3 flags. Then Brisbane pick Voss to lead them via Fevola to nowhere while letting Chris & Brad go south and on to bigger & better things.

  • Richmond’s drafting – Aaron Fiora over Matthew Pavlich in the 1999 draft

David Rodan over Sam Mitchell/Leigh Montagna in 21

Richard Tambling of Lance Franklin in 24

Jarrod Oakley-Nicholls over Mitch Clark in 25

Tyrone Vickery over Daniel Rich in 28

All be it the drafting seems to be rectified now (thank god) just imagine how much of a powerhouse Richmond COULD have been

  • I think you’re over-estimating the power of a coach to turn around a club and I think that’s where many of the worst decisions are made – in sacking coaches or hiring coaches to fix a problem.

I think Carlton’s choice to breach the salary cap many years ago though goes down as the worst club decision I can think of. They’ve never really recovered and it’s arguable that it was ever necessary. The fact that the salary cap exists and all players want to play in a premiership means intelligent players will soon realise they have to tighten their belts if they want to play with a great team. Only the mug teams have a lot of money to throw around on one or two stars.

  • collingwood letting Leigh Mathews go

  • Not trading tippett in 2011 to the Suns or Lions when wanted to leave. Both clubs reportedly had good offers on the table but steven trigg over-ruled the footy department.
Keeping steven trigg as our CEO when his suspension finishes.

  • Yeah Vossy didn’t have the experience and he would have been too close to some of the players.

However the Bombers hiring Matty Knights from out of the blue when he had no prior connection with the club, then extending his contact was a major howler. Worst game manager I have seen.

I found the Suns decision to extend Guy McKenna’s contract in the middle of last season to be a quirky one. Why commit more money, when the club is struggling on the field and the long term future is not yet that bright.

  • Almost everthing Melbourne did from hiring Dean Bailly over Sheedy until getting Neelde.
Firing and re-hiring ceo’s sacking experienced players like cameron Bruce and James McDonald who both went on to play.
Tanking for draft picks when only a couple have performed at least at Melbourne anyway.
This list could go on forever but these are just a few.
Jope this week is a sign of whats to come even though it was just GWS.(not every team kicks 12.2 in a last quater)
