I think you’re over-estimating the power of a coach to turn around a club and I think that’s where many of the worst decisions are made – in sacking coaches or hiring coaches to fix a problem.
I think Carlton’s choice to breach the salary cap many years ago though goes down as the worst club decision I can think of. They’ve never really recovered and it’s arguable that it was ever necessary. The fact that the salary cap exists and all players want to play in a premiership means intelligent players will soon realise they have to tighten their belts if they want to play with a great team. Only the mug teams have a lot of money to throw around on one or two stars.
