What’s the best type of music to revise to?

Our teacher was telling us about a certain type of music that is supposed to help you revise better, but I can’t remember the name of it. All I remember is that it was music that was in time with the human heart beat which is how it helps you relax and revise better. Does anyone know of it?

  • Music to revise better? The word “revise” means to alter, change and rethink so as to improve something. I’m not aware of any music that helps anyone revise their thoughts. If there was, surely schools would be piping it into their classrooms and hallways so students would turn in more thoughtful assignments instead of the “off the top of the head” ones that is the norm in schools around the world.
  • As far as I’m aware, the idea that there’s a “magic ingredient” in music that will improve your revision is rubbish, but there are certain types which are better for revision than others.

I listen to lots of classical music for revision, and I think the key is to listen to something that you don’t know and is quite gentle, so that you don’t get too hugely distracted by it,.

My favourite revision music is an album of harp sonatas by Dussek; harp music is very relaxing and non-intrusive.

I also like to listen to music with huge orchestras, it’s like it takes you to another plain – listen to Mahler’s 8th symphony, 2nd half, if you don’t mind singers; otherwise try Mahler’s 4th symphony or Beethoven’s 3rd symphony.

Tchakovsky symphonies are also quite good, as are Bruckner symphonies. Haydn is also brilliant if you like early classical music.
