DVD holds more data. Enough for a movie. And they are usually used just for that purpose.
A CD holds less data, is older technology, and is mainly used for consumer data storage in different formats.

you can put music or video on either one or data files the main difference is that a cd holds around 7mb and a dvd holds around 4gb

Uh thats pretty basic anyone should know the difference a cd is a disc that stores music and can only be put in a device that plays cds eg cd player and a dvd is a disc that stores a film and can only be played in a dvd player
