When I put in CD, runs, but nothing comes up?

My CD/DVD player works, it’s just that while it’s in the CD/DVD player, it makes a humming noise, but nothing ever comes up. No window asking me if I want to run it. There is no icon associated with that program. For example, I put in a CD. Nothing comes up. So I check COMPUTER. There’s nothing but RECOVERY and C:. My computer is really messed up, can’t even run a lot of programs I install of the internet.

So my main question is – How do I fix the CD/DVD problem? And yes, I checked AUTOPLAY in the control panel multiple times.

My second question is – How do I return my computer’s functions to normal? I used Uniblue Registry Cleaner. Does the registry have anything to do with why my computer is so bad and can’t function correctly?

  • Had also that experience with one of my dvd writers, it just means that its time for you to buy a new dvd writer ($ at newegg-lite on dvd writer) because the lens that usully reads the data on the disc is already wasted/dead, thus cannot read anymore. If you observed that your computer is messed up you could try a few things before thinking of reformmating:

    . run antvirus

    . clean your registry

. disk cleanup and defragmenter (HDD)

. Run MSCONFIG then inactivate all unnecessary programs that automatically starts at startup(programs that are maybe slowing down your computer)

. If these fails, try backing up your files if possible, then reformat.

  • Possibly.

Or some of that software you installed from the internet brought you a virus.

I am assuming that you have checked the operation of the CD drive with a disk that is known to be good, so that you know it is not just a bad disk.

Things to try before actually trying to repair.

Shut computer down, then start it again – do not use restart, use shutdown.

If that doesn’t work, try starting in safe mode, see if you can see the CD drive now.

While in safe mode, run a complete virus scan.

Run windows update manually to make sure all drivers are up to date.

  • About the disk drive, you will need to replace it because the laser that reads the data off the disk is messed up. About everything else, back up all of your data then format the whole entire hard drive which will erase everything then re-install windows and start fresh from that.

  • Just try and reinstall your software for your Cd/Dvd.. If it came from the factory.. go to their website and do a auto detect on your computer and reinstall the driver for the CD rom.

  • uniblue is pretty good and always keeps a backup so you can restore it, i would first check the data lead on the drive if good replace the dive they are so cheap these days
