  • The insurance company will usually need to see the damaged item. In order to see it they will either send a local approved repairer round to your home, or they will as you to send/take it to a local approved repairer.

The item will be inspected and tested, a damage report will be issued to your insurer (with recommendations to repair or replace) and then the insurer will decide how to proceed.

If the item is restorable at a reasonable cost then you may not get a new one.

  • You need to be sure the item is covered by your policy; that you have a receipt or other proof of purchase to show it was yours/how much it cost; that your policy provides ‘new for old’ coverage; provide evidence that it cannot be repaired; and then send the item at your cost to the insurers.

  • you would be expected to submit your claim then ask the insurance company what they want you to do with the item after they have accepted you have a valid claim (and that might not automatically mean you will get a new one)

  • ask the insurance company, anything else is a guess
