Why do mushrooms grow on trees? My 5yo is asking.?

  • Because to some kinds of mushrooms, some kinds of trees are yummy. There are a lot of mushrooms that like dead trees– dead trees can’t defend themselves anymore, but they’re still yummy, so they’re a fine place to live, if you’re a mushroom.

    By the way, mushrooms grow just about everywhere. The ones on trees are some of the easiest to spot, but if you watch out for them on the ground too you’ll find a lot more than you might expect.

  • Basidocarps {mushrooms} are decomposers. They are decomposing some of the food that they are extracting from their attachment surface.
