Why don’t teachers teach real life stuff in school?

Like I don’t know what a mortgage is or how it works or what a tax refund is and how you even do taxes but sure, force me to learn how to graph an imaginary number on a coordinate plane! I also don’t know how to vote, what political parties are, how to write a resume/cover letter/ or anything related to getting a job. I don’t know how to write a check or anything to do with banking, I don’t know how to do loans for college, other basic emergency things like how to jump start a car or how to buy a car or a house!

  • Because high schools are geared towards academia, not “real life” skills—it is presumed that your parents will teach you those things. In many countries, such as the United States, teachers have to a very strict curriculum in order to prepare students to succeed on standardized tests.
  • The reality is that teachers don’t get a choice of curriculum. That is controlled by people outside the classroom. I’m not even sure who! The state, the school district, the school board all have some degree of influence. You are right about students needing some practical course about everyday math. How to budget their income, how to evaluate the pros and cons of purchases, tax preparation. Writing a resume, going for a job interview, opening your own bank account. Some of the information is real easy and could be covered in about minutes, while other basics need more exploration in the classroom. Let’s hear it for a Life Class on Practical Living. Why can’t we graduate from high school knowing how to navigate the complexities of the everyday world.
  • School has nothing to do with real life, that ‘s why.

This is one reason we homeschooled. Our daughter learned in the real world. She knows and has done/learned about all the things you listed, except how to jump start a car.
