Why exactly do people pirate media?

i mean as in pirate DVD’s and music, etc etc. why don’t people just pay for them instead of stealing them. is it because they don’t have much money or because it’s simply free

With respect to music, I think the music industry created this situation themselves. Here’s why I think that. At one point they used to sell cassette and CD singles of hit songs for under $4, but then they jacked up the price of singles to match the price of a whole CD. Then they started to overcharge for one CD that had 1, maybe 2 or 3 good songs on it and the rest was awful, horrible, terrible filler. To some people, it’s not worth paying $18 because you want one song. The music industry (and many others) is crazy greedy and expect people to just suck it up and feed their greed. They expect people to dish out big bucks for sub-par items. Then when people are willing to feed their greed they make it almost impossible to find a store that sells a decent selection of CD’s. Most CDs available are ones the industry is trying to shove down the public’s throats and not what the public wants. Sometimes people want to legally purchase music, but there is no way to do so.

With respect to DVD’s I don’t know why people pirate it. DVD’s are easier and cheaper to find than music.

I don’t pirate media because I don’t think it’s the artist’s fault that the industry created this mess. Maybe if artists take a stand and try to bring back quality to the movie and music industries, then things will start to turn around for the better.

its an issue of availability. now lets be honest in a serous matter. the music store in the mall in my small town closed in 24. MTV is nothing but reruns of Save by the Bell and Boy Meets World, Teen Wolf, and various skateboard type comedy. where am I suppose to find music at all? the crap that is on the radio is nothing but top 40 tripe that is nothing but American Idol contestants. what am I suppose to go to youtube to watch Jpop or Kpop now? I don’t think so.

the music industry imploded on itself for thinking it can charge $18 for a compact disc…..all of the big chain stores are not closed. they did not meet the needs of the people.
