Why is social status so important for evolution?

Women marry for social status and men marry for looks, why is that? Isn’t there other human traits that people would like to for the next generation? Your opinion

  • You are vastly simplifying the reasons people choose partners 🙂

Women often do prefer mates with high social standing. It means the children they create together will have a better chance of good nutrition, healthcare, intelligence, education and a good industrious example to learn from as they grow up. But they also like men who are intelligent, hard working, humorous, empathetic, attractive, athletic, courageous and nurturing.

Men do not pick partners just for looks. Like women they like to have attractive mates (the definition of attractive is culturally specific btw); but they also like intelligent, humorous, industrious, nurturing mates. Men also like women with his social status (remember the fairy tail of the princess and the frog?)

When you come right down to it, both genders are looking for similar traits.

Just goes to show that stereotyping is pretty useless once you dig down into the subject.

  • High social status = lots of money (or food) to help raise the children.

Beauty = health, and health is very important for success in pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing.

These basic instincts come from animal word. The beauty thing works pretty much the same, while social status means lots of mating and lots of children, so females want these genes in their children.

  • My wife did not marry me for my status, and I didn’t marry her for her looks. She looks nice but it was not even a consideration. We married because we loved each other.

  • marriage or not I dont see how it effects evolution. people want to tie their mates down and always will. Even if marriage didnt exists you would still have the same rules in relationships
