I’ve never got a flu shot (I never get sick) but I’m strongly considering getting both this year….not sure yet though.

No and no. I realize it is a dangerous illness, but I don’t think they have done enough research on it. It was a difficult decision to make, but I would rather risk me and my children getting the illness than risk deadly side effects of a prematurely released vaccine. Luckily, none of my family have underlying illnesses.

when i was growing up, i never got any type of flu shots, my mom didn’t believe in them and it was cool because we never got sick (flu)…..
well now we got freakin’ swine flu going around so i’m debatin’ so bad if i want to get it for my son, it really sucks and i need to make a decision because a kid died from swine flue about 10 min from my house, the next town over:(

No. We take what comes our way and get over it. Everybody I’ve known who got the shot was sick for 2 days.
i dont know yet… i have a 6 yr old and a 4 month old… i never got the flu shot, and my 6 yr old has never gotten it, and we’ve never had the flu….
and this vaccine is so new, i dont know if its worth the risks….
plus, this swine flu thing is being blown out of proportion. just as many ppl die from the regular flu every year, its just not reported cuz the flu is not new….
A) there is not enough testing done on the vaccine.
B) there is mercury in the vaccine, which is one of the most toxic substances you can put into the human body
C) it can cause nerve damage
D) there is too much risk and quite frankly I am just not ready to do something to me or my kids, that could hurt us terribly.
More people died from the shot itself, then the flu in 1976.
The government needs to scare us. They want to spread fear into the population.
People get the regular flu all the time…and die from that.
well, since it looks like Houston didn’t order their full allotment of the vaccine, I probably won’t be getting one.

I have had the flu of the year, twice, and both times sick for more than 2 weeks, missing school, missing work. First I thought I was going to die, and then I was afraid I wasn’t. Everything hurt, even my hair. I was a weak as a kitten.
Flu vaccines are all pretty much old technology, and there are approx 5 plants on the planet that make the stuff, and they do so very well.
If you wish to read just how devastating a flu can be, read The Great Influenza by John M. Barry… at your library. It’s the history of the greatest disease ever to have struck this planet… the 1918 flu. There was no family in the US, who did not have someone get it and /or die from it. Hugely interesting book.
Flu of one sort or another have been around since before Roman Times…. Flu is a crowd disease.
This vaccine, like them all, now are killed virus. Since those have become available, I have had the shot every season… and I have not had flu since.
EDIT:. The thimersol lady is incorrect!!!! No flu vaccine sold in the US any longer has thimersol. And interestingly, thimersol had been in vaccines since the 1930’s, when no one ever heard of autism. Since its removal, the “confirmed diagnosis” of autism keeps going up. So, obviously thimersol isn’t the issue, is it…… If you wish to know more, see the June 29 issue of Discover Magazine, as well, at your library. Interesting isn’t it? How people just hear something and repeat it because someone said it, or saw it written, and voila, it is the absolute truth to end all truth. Geez….wonder why people don’t stay current on their information

I stay current on flu and pneumonia vaccines, as I have asthma. I will get the H1N1 vaccine, as well. I would get the vaccine for my kids, but they have already had the swine flu.
The biggest perceived risk of the vaccine is that it contains Thimerosol. Many believe this is correlated with Autism, and it has been eliminated from the MMR vaccine. There is no scientific study backing up this suspicion, however.
EDIT: As I said, there is no evidence. This was on the news today, however. I don’t know whether it’s correct or not, but a reputable news source was discussing it today. I think I used an adequate number of qualifiers, rather than stating any of this as hard fact. My child (26) experienced seizures for two years following an immunization. I have legitimate concerns about immunizations. It’s offensive to act like I’m gossiping. My experience has been far harsher than”repeating things I’ve heard.”
EDIT: With a tiny bit of research, I find state web sites that say there IS thimerosol in H1N1 vaccines, though there are doses available without it for those who are concerned. I wish people would try to stay current.
I got it, because I am a phlebotomist and therefore could be exposed to people who have the flu. I had no side effects, and the virus IS in fact, dead. There is no way you can get the flu from it.
Yes and Yes. I’ll get it because I live in a house with kiddies and an asthmatic. My children are scheduled for Nov. Risks are the same with any other flu vaccine (fevers, swelling, lethargy, sore throat), the process being used is no different from the process used for every seasonal flu vaccine. The fears about thimerosal in my views go against all the data we collected over the last several decades, including the most recent studies out of CA who banned the substance from vaccines ten years ago. I’ll stick with the physicians on this one.
Thimerosal btw is only present in the multi-vial usage vaccinations. The single shot syringes and the nasal spray does not contain the substance at all.
