6 week old kitten throwing up?

I have 3 kittens that are 6 weeks old. I have been hand raising them since birth, as their Mom abandoned them. They’re my miracle kittens, because when I found them they were almost frozen. They were stiff when I picked them up. I’m usually pretty darn good at this raising kittens thing, but just a couple of days ago all 3 kittens started to throw up their food. I have been feeding them canned cat food. (wet) I mix it with either KMR or water to make an oatmeal consistency. The brand is 9 lives. Faith, the one female kitten threw up big piles of her food that she had just eaten 3 hours prior. She does eat pretty fast. The male kitten, Chubs, he threw up once so far. And the other female, Hope, threw up one time as well. For some reason they will not lap water or KMR from a bowl. They get some in their nose, then they are not interested anymore. This worries me that they will become dehydrated. I offered each of them some watered down KMR in their nursing bottle tonight, but they didn’t take it. Any ideas about why they would be throwing up all of the sudden?

They all play, and are active. They are in their nesting box right now playing and fighting each other. Except Faith (the one who threw up a few times tonight) who is sleeping right now. But she was playing about a half hour ago. Are they maybe eating too much? All 3 combined eat about 1 can of cat food per feeding.

They have their first vet check up and vaccines scheduled for this Tuesday. May 14th. So they have not had shots, or been “de-wormed” yet. There are no signs of intestinal worms though. None in their vomit, or poop. Their bellies are not swollen. They seem to be in pretty good health. Also- any ideas on how to get them to lap KMR and water? I’m very concerned that they are not getting enough to drink. =/ Thanks in advance!

  • In regards to getting them to drink water, get one of those shallow meat or vegetable trays and don’t put very much in. I told our children (grown up children) that they’d find it amusing when the kittens learned to lap but because I was putting out only shallow trays for the adult cats to be certain there was nothing deep enough for an adventurous kitty to drown in, when they found it they learned to lap in one quick lesson without getting it up their noses. The ribbed bottom of the tray made it hard for them to put their faces too far down while still giving them something to lap.

How big is that tin? I was splitting a third of a 440g (8 oz) tin between an adult cat and two kittens when they were about 10 weeks old and they wouldn’t finish it completely. Perhaps the food doesn’t suit them. Try something different. Have they only just started on it? If so, they might need to back off and try again in a week or so.

Happily playing, fighting and sleeping sounds like they’re quite well. Keep an eye on gum colour and how easily a pinch of skin returns to normal position. If the gums start to pale, that’s when you get concerned about dehydration. Lethargy is also a concern. Lethargy won’t look like, “I’m feeling happily sleepy and will you two stop bumping me while you fight?” It will look more like being exhausted and starting to lack interest in life.

  • Best thing to do is a vet asap. But i would Try pet milk and quit feeding them canned food for a few days. My cats absolutely hate 9 lives they get upset stomach too. They would puke and i just chamged their food. I feed them whiskas and I wouldn’t add water to it either. Also they may be over eating. They could also be drinking too much water…

Just be on top of hpw fast they eat and how mucj they drink.
