Because they have a greater tendency to marry for personality than looks. Either in the sense that one of them is better looking but won over by an amazing personality or in the sense that when you aren’t totally infatuated with someone’s looks you tend to see their true self more clearly.
The only thing I can think of that would make them worse is that the sex won’t be as good, which can def hurt a relationship.
It’s like that song goes: if you want to be happy for the rest of your life never make a pretty woman your wife, so from my personal point of view, get an ugly girl to marry you.

Speaking as a guy who has been married 25 years I guess I qualigy as ugly according to your hypothesis, but remember beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder.
My wife has great sense of humor as do I and we both have raised two awesome well balanced kids,course it wasnt easy but thats another story
What seems to happen is that if you or the girl are incredibly hot and irristible, there will always be someone making a play for one or the other, now according to the law of averages sooner or later , perhaps after a fight at home, or after a few beers,or simply in a horny moment,,,,, yep there ya go!!
