About how much does it cost to build a boat?

How much would it cost roughly to
Build a flat bottomed 10′ boat? And what supplies would I need? What is cheaper to build with, aluminum or wood? I have all the stuff to weld but I want to know what would be cheaper.

A 10′ flat bottom boat is a very reasonable ‘first time’ boat to build. I built boats for over 40 years, and it is a great hobby. . .
The cheapest and easiest to build will be wood – mainly, using plywood with or without a layer of fiberglass cloth. The link above will show & explain.
I have built over a dozen of their boats, and they have great plans, great instructions, and also give you phone & email support, and answer all your questions for as long as it takes for you to complete your boat building project. They are great people to do business with.

    How much will it cost?

Human powered or outboard powered? Cost will depend on the kind and type of 10′ flatbottom boat you choose to build – and how well you want to build it. It could cost you as little as $6 or as much as $2,0 (possibly a tiny bit less or much-much more) depending on the plans you choose. If you do it right, and make it something you will be proud of – for sure, it probably will be cheaper to buy an old used one. However, building your own, can (if you want it to) result in a very nice, new boat you will be very proud of, that will outlast your great-great grandkids, , ,

I strongly suggest wood over aluminum for a ‘first time’ boat builder. Even though you know how to wield – those “cut it twice and it’s still too short” mistakes can be very-very costly in terms of material alone, (I’ve been there, and done that). Sheet aluminum as you know, it not at all cheap. while a sheet of plywood, or a 2×4 is easy on the budget to replace.

As for tools – if you can make a bed, and spread honey on a piece of toast, you can build a fantastic wooden boat and even fiberglass it (if you want). It is that easy – no rocket science or magic here. You will need a saw, screw gun, and some basic tools you most likely already have around the house. With fiberglass over plywood, you do NOT need a mold or expensive jig. It is really quick and easy to build – just check the link, and review all it’s “boat plans” as well as “boat building methods”.

  • Simple, buy used. The cost of materials for either wood or Aluminum will exceed the cost of a fiberglass or Aluminum boat on the used market. ‘A simple wood boat requires tools and skills you may or may not have. And the finished product will have yearly maintenance issues that make the long term ownership pretty expensive. Fiberglass and Aluminum are not usually for the home builder. Molds and Jigs expand the cost beyond the one-off need for your boat.

  • Aluminum would be cheaper

  • Too much get a kit boat there easy and cheap go on wooden boat and there are lots of kits

  • the cheep way out is just buy a used boat there many for sale out there

  • I agree with capt John. Use wood for a first time builder. http://www.captainraymonds.com
