Am I a loser for not having a car?

I’m 18 and today was my last day of high school. I’m looking through my yearbook and its showing all these 10th and 11th graders who have brand new mustangs, BMW’s and Cameron’s and stuff. More than half of the kids at my school drive and I’m so jealous. I have always gotten pretty good grades (better than my friends with cars) and I would beg my parents for cars that cost like 3,0 and they wouldn’t even consider it and they have good money. I’ve had my license for 2 years btw and they made me wait till my littLe sister was old enough to get her license. I don’t live with them now. How can I save for one? Oh and they let my little sister drive to school by herself and I have never driven by myself I always take the city bus for an hour and a half since I transferred

  • Since you are 18 years old, you can do pretty much what you want now. You shouldn’t expect to be able to get a car too soon unless you have someone to buy one for you.

You need to build your credit by getting a couple of credit cards, department store cards and use them frequently, but pay them off every month. Also consider getting a “secured” credit card (not a pre-paid credit card), and use it buy things you need, but pay it off each month. It takes time to build credit, so be patient.

Get a good steady job and save something each month toward a car. Your first car should be a good used car for about $50. You can buy cheaper but you risk having problems that could be expesive to fix. As your credit and income improve, trade up to better and better cars.

  • short answer: yes you are a loser for not having a car.

however, ALL THE RICH KIDS that drive their shitty bmws and cameros all had their parents buy their car for them. essentially, they did nothing and were given everything. i think thats a little embarrassing as well. theyre gonna total them anyway.

so essentially, you can get a decent car for about 15 bucks. it will need some work. your parents wont buy you a car, however, because the insurance is basically more expensive than the car.

    so heres what you do
    1. work shitty minimum wage job until you have 15 bucks (biking or walking distance)
    2. buy said car, CHOOSE wisely, nothing that burns oil. no riced out eclipse or some garbage
craigslist and local papers are your friend. sometimes people need to get rid of stuff ASAP or someone died and they arent trying to jew you.
    3. fix said car. tune up (plugs if you can, wires, change trans fluid, seafoam it, fix anything thats broken. big parts can be gotten at a salvage yard or on ebay for cheap)
    4. pay for your own insurance when working shitty job.
dont speed, dont get pulled over, and no matter what, dont beat on your car. its the only one you have. speeding tickets make insurance more expensive.

so theres no reason why your car shouldnt last well into 270k with mobil 1 synthetic oil and maintenance.

stay away from stuff with rust. get a car, preferably with a manual . nothing over 160,0 miles.

so grab a socket set and some CRC freeze off or a rust penetrant, but you should be able to do all your own maintenance. seriously, like plug wires are 30 dollars max.

theres a point where you have to tell your parents to stop running your life.
if you have to move out, do it.
