Am I too small to play football?

I have never played football before, and I am in 8th grade. My HS has a DV team. with no cuts. I am 5,5, 130 ponds, and all summer to hit the weight room. I will put all my heart and soul into it, but I am worried I am too small. I am decently fast, and I guess I have OK hand-eye. Am I too small, and if not, then what position should I play?

  • Your size is fine.. Just go out and give it your best shot and have fun…. Good luck…..

  • don’t worry about your size. You may be small but just work on your speed and agility. Sam Wyly wrote in his book A Thousand Dollars and an Idea that growing up he wanted to play nose guard on his high school football team but was much too small for the position. He worked and worked and gained a lot of speed and agility and not only made the varsity team but he also took his team to state after taking down the hardest team in the state. He learned more from this than just football and gained a lot of determination that helped him in his business endeavors in the future. He’s currently like a billionaire. So just pick a position, practice, and get good and fast, if he can do it, so can you.

  • No, you are not too small to play football. In fact, I highly encourage you to join your high school DV football team this upcoming season. It will still not (yet) be too late for you to start playing football.

Based on your height and weight, as well as your speed, I believe that the best fit for you is at running back. You have the ideal size for an 8th grade/high school freshman running back.

My best advice for you is to work hard and perform very well in practice every day. In addition, what you need to do this (and every) summer is eat healthy, exercise by doing weight lifting, and either jogging or going for a long run every day. If you do these things, you will get faster, stronger, and into better shape, which will greatly improve your chances of becoming a successful, top notch running back in high school football, who could go on to play college football in the future.

  • Dude you’re in 8th grade, you are supposed to be small. 5’5 130 is not that small either for an 8th grader. I wouldnt worry about working out, you’re too young to develope muscle like that. Your body is still growing.

  • no, you have a decent height for your age. I would try out for corner back or tight end depending on what side of the ball you wanna be on.

  • Would not lose any points for trying out. No worry. Just find out by doing. whats to lose? if not there are other sports later…

  • Go for it, and even if you don’t make the team, you know what you have to do for the next try.

  • At that age size doesn’t matter. Also, I think you could play HB or CB.

  • no you are okay maybe overtime you grow taller
