  • I’m assuming you mean American Cocker Spaniels versus the English Cocker?

American Cocker Spaniels have been badly victimized by puppy mills and backyard breeders so the great majority you see around have poor temperaments and are nasty creatures. A dog with bad genes can never have its temperament corrected regardless of the time and energy you spend training it. Well-bred and well-trained American Cockers are great family dogs, though you must also understand that being smaller dogs and a soft breed they do not tolerate abuse or rough play as well as larger/harder breeds. Children should always be under direct adult supervision when with any dog no matter the breed. Children should be taught how to respect the dog and read the dog’s body language.

I’ve never owned American Cockers as I’m not a fan of their looks, but I own two English Cockers and mine are from reputable breeders, have the correct “merry” temperament, have been socialized, and are excellent with children. There have been occasions where my dogs have come across a child or two that were too rough for their liking, but being Cockers with correct temperaments they walked away from the threatening behavior instead of lashing out as other badly bred dogs would have.

  • To me no they are not good around kids…most small dogs are not. My mom has a Cocker Spaniel/Chihuahua mix dog and he looks just like a cocker spaniel though and he has almost bitten my little 1 1/2 y o niece in the face about 3 different times and she wasn’t even touching the dog. Just keep an eye on him for any signs that he may try to bite or if they are playing with him and you can tell he has had enough.

  • If you could find the right cocker –maybe.. Cockers and ESS were once the same dog and then they kinda split down diffrent lines–and just like most of the small breeds the cocker has been overbred without respect to temperment just looks–that has caused some really bad traits to appear. I’d trust a springer around my children–they have still stayed a good breed. Try a French Brittany or a ESS or some of the other sporting breeds. The 13 year olds will love the springer or brittany and they are the ones that are big enough to play with it anyway..

  • Cocker Spaniels are good with children, unless they have Cocker Rage. My grandchildren have always played under supervision with my GSD’s, however when the kids arrive I always put my dogs into another room until they calm down. Obviously neither you nor I would allow a two year old to tease our dogs, or run around with them in the garden/yard.

  • there is not any breed of canines it is immediately sturdy with young little ones. that each and each physique demands early socialization and preparation. additionally, the youngsters would desire to benefit the thank you to comprehend and be comfortable with the canines. for my area i would not propose the Cocker Spaniel. they are rather the breed maximum in all probability to chew. it is regularly because of the fact the vast attractiveness of Cocker Spaniels has delivered approximately destructive breeding practices foremost to many canines with unreliable and aggressive temperaments and assorted well-being issues. in case you’re set on a Cocker Spaniel confirm which you get one from a sturdy breeder and prepare the puppy and your little ones the thank you to comprehend one yet another. continually supervise whilst the youngsters and the canines are at the same time.

  • Just make sure to keep a close eye on them when they are together. Any breed can be good with kids if raised and trained around them. Some breeds are just naturally better than others with children.

I have also heard the breed is not a good childrens dog and they have one of the highest bite rates of any breed.

  • Cocker Spaniels can be very nervous around children. Sometimes, if they are raised together with the child from the beginning, it works out, but they can be very jealous and so be extra careful.

  • Cockers normally aren’t that good with children. They tend to act very nervous around them and can be fear aggressive.

If you properly train and socialize him/her to tolerate children you’ll have a much better chance of him/her not being fear aggressive.

  • Cockers are intelligent, gentle dogs that thrive as part of a family. All dogs have different personalities but considering that the cocker is one of the most popular dog breed here in america they can’t be that bad of a family dog.
