Ball python sperm plug consistency?

I currently own a Ball Python and today I decided to sex him. I used the popping method because it seemed the most easiest at the moment. Well when I attempted to sex my snake brown liquid paste came out. Now Im not sure if this was a sperm plug forming or something else. still don’t know if its a boy or girl yet and yes i know if these are sperm plugs then it is a male. Any Ideas?

  • Depending on how old the snake is, if it is a male, he might be able to control his hemipenes in response to pressure. Male snakes can develop this ability only a few weeks after being hatched, which is why when people pop their snakes, they often assume female, but have them probed and discover they are a male. The brown substance that you saw is the “musk” from the one of the paired scent glands that are in the base of the tail of nearly all snakes. Pushing on the base of the tail often compresses the scent glands in the tail of either sex, causing them to expel a small amount of this substance.

So it wasn’t necessarily a sperm plug. This happens occasionally when adult snakes are popped too. If you can’t see anything, I would see if you could find someone to probe him. I’m going to my local reptile store to have it done for my baby python soon 🙂

Most reptile stores will do it free of charge. Just call and ask.

    I hope this helped! 🙂
