Can a 22 year old student teacher date an 18 year old high school senior?

My female friend is a senior and we have a new 22 year old male student teacher in our history class. She has a huge crush on him-he is pretty good looking. We saw him working out at the gym once and he tried teaching us how to handle the different weights. They both started flirting. She turned 18 in October. She is thinking about asking him out for dinner and hanging out with him, although she hasn’t asked him. We know he is single. Is it okay since she is an adult? She is graduating in a month and a half anyway. Should she just wait until after graduation?

  • If he teaches her in a class then it is unlawful for him to date her. The school might even have a policy against him dating any student even if she is not one of his students. She should just wait until after graduation to avoid any awkwardness and him possibly losing his job over it.
  • She is 18 officially an adult so yes that is fine

  • Wait for graduation. Better not to give them any softballs cuz they could hit them right out of the park.

  • Maybe ask now if she want to go the sneaky way and try to hide their relationship until about a half a month school is out, or tell him that she like him but she thinks they should wait to date until about a week or two schools out and then if he wants to try and start dating right away then they should just try to keep it low. Hope everything turns out okay, I wish them the best of luck! xx

  • If she wants him to earn his credential, if she wants him to become a teacher, if she wants to keep him out of prison, she will wait until she graduates. Surely, she can restrain herself that long. The risk to him is just terrible.

  • Definitely wait til after graduation!!!!!!!!!
You may think it’s alright cause she’s 18 but it’s like a teacher dating a student. He can lose his position as a student teacher which will most likely ruin his chance of ever becoming a teacher. You may think there is nothing wrong but the school will disagree and this is high school so if you try to keep it a secret then the rumor mill will start up and spread around until some teachers pet or someone who doesn’t like you or him tells the principle

Senior guy in high school with common sense

  • In my opinion, I would wait until graduation. Technically, they are both of age and not doing anything wrong but if they go out on a dinner date, movies, etc it’s a possibility another teacher could see them, another student, or the principal and they could say something which will most likely lead to discipline towards the teacher! If she really wants a relationship with this guy she should just wait. That’s what I would do.

    Hope I helped!

  • Yes, definitely, wait.
The issue isn’t age but authority. Technically, he has authority over her and is supposed to be ethically spotless. Flirting alone is morally questionable.
Once she is graduated and no longer associated with him in a professional capacity, OK.

  • 18 years old is still very young. But the biggest problem is he is a ‘teacher’ at her school. So dating or any sort of relationship is out. It would destroy his career. The very fact that your friend is even considering asking him out and that she has been flirting with him, shows she is far too immature to be dating anyone! It also shows she is incredibly selfish.

Let her finish her first year at college, then she can go back, visit her old school and see if he is still available.

  • That is a no fly zone which can get you into a lot of trouble.

  • Unless she wants him to lose his job and the possibility for any other teaching jobs in the future she needs to wait until after she graduates and leaves the school. While she is legally an adult, dating him while she’s still a student can get him into some serious legal trouble.

Had a friend who dated our student teacher. He got fired and wasn’t allowed to teach again.

  • She needs to just wait until she graduates. Even though she’s of legal age, she is still a student at the school. And teachers are forbidden from being romantically involved with any student, regardless of age.

  • i think its fine
