Denied Medi-cal although diabetic?

Being denied Medi-cal although diabetic?

I am a 24 year old diabetic who is working a part time job at 8 bucks an hour and won’t work me past 20 hours a week. I also am going to school trying to make Something of myself, but how can I, without my health? iWhen I was 21 I had to fight it and won and have had medi-cal since. However all of a sudden I was dropped from my medi-cal because they don’t consider me disabled. My condition is a disability for if I don’t have insurance I will literally die. I’ve had type 1 diabetes since I was 10 and all I was grateful for was my Insurance and now I don’t even have that.

I have a court date coming up, what can I say to the judge to keep my insurance so I can get my insulin and test strips?

  • You don’t “automatically” qualify for welfare, just because you have a medical condition. You’re correct, diabetes isn’t a disability – it’s a medical condition. How do you know it’s not a disability? You’re able to work part time, attend school, and have a social life.

When you’re too old for child welfare, you have to get out there and earn your own way. You need a second part time job, or a new full time job, so you can get your insulin and test strips. You want them? Go earn the money to buy them. Pretty simple.

Regardless of whether or not you have diabetes, you’re not “entitled” to a lifetime of OTHER people working and paying for your test strips and insulin.

You don’t need “insurance” to keep you from dying. You need insulin. Don’t confuse the two. Lots and lots and LOTS of adult type 1 diabetics, earn their own way, and some even pay for their own insulin and test strips. All the ones with insurance, NOT welfare, ALSO have to pay copays and deductibles.

Your problem is mostly an income problem, not an insurance problem. Fix the income. Work full time doing ANYTHING, even flipping burgers. Work two jobs. Heck, work three, if you can manage. Take a college course or two in the evenings, or online, to “make something of yourself”. You need to prioritize, and college is WAY down on the list for you right now.

OH, and think before you vote. All you young people who voted democrat and for Obama, have voted yourselves out of full time jobs. Not a good idea, but you reap what you sow.

  • That’s not what “a disability” means. A “disability” means a condition that keeps you from working, walking, etc., even with your medication.

Also, you won’t die from not having insurance. You can get the test strips and insulin without insurance. You can buy them, with money, just like you buy most other things.

Because your condition is not what the word “disability” means, you cannot get medicaid just by saying that it is a disability.

You will need to get health insurance another way, not from medi-cal.

    Option 1:

Get another job, one that will let you get health insurance through work.

    Option 2:

Apply to buy regular health insurance from a health insurance company. Wait for the insurance company to deny you, because of diabetes. Next, after you get the denial letter, apply for coverage from the California Managed Risk Pool. If you are still living in CA, you should be approved. However, you have to pay about $25 a month for it, so I’m not sure if you can afford it.

    Option 3:

Move to NY, NJ, MA, etc. In some states, insurance companies must sell to every adult under 65 who wants to buy (at the normal price for that state, not $25 a month), even if they have diabetes.

    Option 4:

Get your insulin and test strips by buying them, with money, without insurance.

Option 5: If you really want, you could try to cut off your legs so that you will have a condition that actually does qualify as a disability and get medi-cal.

  • If Medi-cal has always been your medical service, you have never had insurance. Medi-cal is government sponsored health care, it is not insurance. To receive medi-cal in you must be disabled. The term disabled is used many different ways by different groups – for medi-cal it means too sick to work or go to school. That’s not you, you no longer meet the criteria for the healthcare.

What do you do? Every community college and public university in California offers low cost insurance for students. In fact, if you are attending a UC you are required to purchase it, if you don’t have your own insurance (public assistance programs don’t count).

There are gazillion low cost and fee based clinics that will provide you with the treatment you need.

In California you won’t literally die from having diabetes, without insurance. You could die if you don’t take the time to find the proper resources and effort to use them.

  • Being diabetic is not a disability. I don’t know what made you ever think that. That’s offending the people that are really disabled (people w/missing limbs, mentally impaired). You can actually work and go to school. The people that have real disabilities may not even be able to do that. Stop feeling sorry for yourself. Stop going to school and get a full time job that offers health insurance. When you are financially stable and have your own health insurance then maybe you can return to school. There are too many people in this country who rely to much on welfare because they want to continue to do things (i.e. go to school) when they clearly cannot.
