do i need a wax ring if i put in a flange?

I just put a a flange under the toilet. Rather than the piece of plain pipe that used to be sticking through. With this new flange, do I still have to use a wax ring?

  • Yes. Just make sure your flange is at the right height. I think I know what you had. If the toilet is over a ventilated crawl space it is not noticeable that the toilet is not sealed. This also makes for great venting, for flushing purposes. It might also occasionally overflow. The new system will be much better. Be sure the flange can be very securely screwed to the floor. If not, new piece of floor needed.

  • Yes. The wax ring goes on top of that flange. The wax is designed to creat e water tight seal around the bottom of your toilet where the water goes through.

  • yes, you still need a wax ring, but just a plain one, not the one with the plastic flange built in
