Do people's brains really switch off when using a mobile?

Or the internet? Text messaging? Social networks? Or did those reported on really have little brain activity to begin with?

  • cognitive brian function turns off all the time, even while driving too.. higher awareness is something only we can do, i think that’s pretty sad and leaves us feeling as a species lonely, be wonderful to hold a conversation with a cat, about the merits of false prophets and their followers shenanigans..

  • Brains don’t turn on and off – well, our brains turn “off” when we die, of course. What happens is that sections of the brain that perform certain functions cycle (as in “switch back and forth”) as we do things. For instance, we can’t talk and think at the same time so while we’re talking to someone – or on the mobile – the brain’s language center and it’s areas used for thought take turns becoming active and inactive. This cycling usually takes only milliseconds so we don’t notice the lag. You’ll sometimes see more latency (lag) in the elderly. We can also be distracted and loose our “train of thought”. We really can’t focus on more than one thing at a time. You daydream while listening to someone talk and you’ll have no idea what they said – even though you know you were listening and heard the words they spoke.

If we think while using the internet, while texting or while on Facebook or Tumblr, then our brains are engaged in what we’re doing. It’s when we try to do more than one thing at a time, that our brains don’t work too well.

  • Watching a long tv show or using a phone’s apps switches our minds to a different state of activity.

The most common one is called the alpha state, in which your mind has entered a sort of “tunnel vision”. The result is a human who has some of their sensory capabilities “muted” for as long as the alpha state lasts.

Excessive use of entering alpha state can cause the mind to lose its sharpness. That’s why watching a screen all day can be bad for you.

  • Side swiped not switched off.

It derails into an enclosed area of thought that negates exterior signals.

Best equated to being a teenager – and nothing derogatory towards teenagers meant by that.

  • I think peoples brains go into alternative gear when they text and drive!

Fo people actually realise how dangerous and deadly that really is?

  • no. The focus is diverted, and the awareness off surroundings is momentarily incapacitated but the functionality is not turned off. Far from it

  • my brain switched off years ago …i’m on auto pilot…
