Do you bucket your child?

We see so many kids that are always in “Buckets”. They are in a carrier in the car that gets lifted out and attached to a stroller or carried and placed on a seat. I think the kids are less active because they are strapped in so much.

We’ve never bucketed our kid except in the car. Our car seat is the type that doesn’t have a lift out part. It was rated number one for safety. Sure we have to lift him in and out and strap him in each time but I think it’s totally worth it. From the time he was very little, he was in our arms or a body carrier if we were out. Then he was walking.

Now, occasionally on long walks we’ll bring a stroller he can ride in if he gets tired but usually not. Usually he walks or daddy carries him on his shoulders.

Update:

I do think it makes a difference. Experts say to avoid bucket time and our baby was walking on his nine month birthday.

  • No, we don’t. We did with my first, and the cons outweighed the pros, though our daughter was running by 10 months so I don’t think that was a difference.

First when you realize that sitting in a recline (like a car seat) trims oxygen levels, and often the deep sleep a baby goes into in a seat is because of lowered oxygen levels, and the increased risk for SIDS that causes.. then you understand why experts say to limit time in a seat.

Then there’s other things. Like how carrying or wearing your baby helps digestion, helps them breathe more regularly and even can increase oxygen levels, etc. Then there’s the annoyance in carrying the bucket, how many people put it on shopping carts (dangerous), the lack of interaction between parent and baby when they’re in the bucket… even if you’re picking your baby up and putting them in a stroller the difference between that and moving the bucket to the stroller is that you are TOUCHING your baby, you’re likely looking in their face for a moment, possibly taking a second to kiss them on the cheek as you put them in the stroller, and there is no jolt as the bucket latches into the stroller.

Then there was carrying the bucket. It HURTS. Literally. Many women get a tendonitis of the thumb from trying to carry it around, shoulder and back aches, all for what?

My first and second had buckets, we used my first’s bucket carrying her all over. I don’t think it made her less intelligent, or have health problems, or walk later, etc. Like I said, she was running by her 10th month. My second had a bucket which we left permanently in the car, though I did take it out on hot days and let it cool in the shade while we let the car cool down, then would put him in. Otherwise, most of the time we left in the car. I used an Ergo so that I was carrying him and my daughter was with me, the result was I could look in his eyes anytime and kiss him any time. He was talking sooner than her, but otherwise is more shy and walked MUCH later (about 18 months.) My third is also riding in the Ergo, she doesn’t have a bucket, we used a convertible. Besides being more comfortable, it’s more convenient and I think it’s healthier for them. Also, with my first she had a lot of digestive issues, but with my second and third they haven’t had any of the problems she had (constipation, GERD symptoms, explosive spit up, etc.)

  • If you have a young infant, I really don’t see what the difference is between lifting your child in and out of carseat just to put them in a stroller or carry them and just leaving in them in the original carseat and attaching it to a stroller, etc? Either way, they’re really just lying there until they’re mobile enough to do something on their own. I never had a carseat that attached to a stroller, or even had a body carrier to put my infant son in, and it didn’t make one difference in his developmental stages. He still didn’t start crawling until about 10 months old, and didn’t walk until almost 14 months. Both of which are obviously on the much later ends of the spectrum. He’s 5 now and has a ridiculous amount of energy just like every other 5 year old.

  • I had the same situation for our baby (car seat 9m+ to 4 yrs) and I went to Halfords too. But they were very helpful – however, we have a Peugot 306 hatchback which apparently is crap (alongwith any Vauxhall make) for fitting child seats, as the seat belts are ‘webbed’ and hence suffer from seat belt crunch, which, Halfords say, can cause the seat belt to be released at impact. I know I havent answered your question as such, but I never give women a straight response. But for those who want to buy a child car seat, beware Peugot and Vauxhall cars!!! And Kia’s too, because theyre just so ugly!!!!
