Do you expect someone to open an enclosed document envelope in order to find the recipient?

My sister ordered something to her work place
She never received it
The seller said it was refused
The work place said it was refused as there was no recipient
The seller said there was an enclosed document envelope with the order details inside and had the mail room opened it, they would have seen the recipient

Would you expect your mail room to open an enclosed document envelope in order to find the recipient?

I would have thought no since it contains personal details and sensitive information – would this not be equivalent to opening someone else’s mail?

  • The seller is at fault if there was not enough information on the envelope to identify the recipient.

Where I live, it is against the law to open someone else’s mail.

  • No, your sister’s workplace shouldn’t have opened the package. If there was no recipient name, how is the mailroom to know who to deliver the package to? They did the right thing to return the package to the sender because they are likely not supposed to open packages without recipient names. .

Ask your sis if she instructed the shipper to include her name on the package. If so, the shipper needs to reship to her at no cost, but this time include her name on the outside of the package. If your sis did not request her name be included in the address (usually there are special shipping instructions that can be entered by the buyer or the buyer can use the second address line for their name), then she’ll probably have to pay for the package to be reshipped.
