Do you get made fun of for liking NASCAR? If so, what is your response?

Living near Chicago, I get made fun of a lot. There are maybe about 20 people at my school that like NASCAR. I only know 3 others, but 20 is an estimate.

I actually get made fun of for liking NASCAR. It’s pathetic. Up north, it’s all about football, baseball, basketball. I like all of those, but I love NASCAR too.

I just ignore those that do so. Good thing I don’t need to wear my shirt to school, only on race days! Just wear it once on the Friday before Daytona.

Do youy get made fun of for watching NASCAR?

  • I live in South Carolina and have never been made fun of for liking NASCAR.The only insults I have ever heard have been on here.I just ignore it because most of the people that are making fun are ignorant or just buttholes.I don’t let others influence my way of thinking.I love NASCAR and if someone else doesn’t,they have a right to their opinion.

  • I am from the South and became a NASCAR fan in 1976 and it was considered a redneck sport then. However, especially in the South it has become more acceptable in recent years and the fan base has grown. Back in the 70’s there were very few women at the races. Now I see a lot of them at the races, probably more than one-third. I still think college football is king in the South, but NASCAR runs a close second here and I am no longer called a redneck for liking it. Chicago sports fans need to become enlightened 🙂

  • i got somewhat made fun off by my best friend who i haven’t seen in almost two years.

i was watching the spring richmond race last year. the big one had just happen see here ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsjCdKG6i… ).
i thought of calling someone cause i wanted them to see this. so i called up my best friend, the one who i haven’t seen in two years. so i called him up and told him he’s got to see this. you know what he told me? he said “i don’t watch it, all they do is go around in circles” .

i thought he’d at least give some interest to see what i was watching, but he didn’t.

  • I live in Canada, so I get made fun of all the time, and when people aren’t calling me a Canadian redneck, their making fun of NASCAR itself. I usually respond by saying that it is better because it is more satisfying when your driver wins, because they beat 42 other cars, whereas in other sports you only have to beat one team. And that you feel more connected to the sport because you could enter the sport yourself if you wanted to. When someone makes fun of left turns, I tell them I would like to see you make a righthand turn in NASCAR!

  • I obviously won’t get BA on this one, but I make fun of others. Not on Y!A but in person. Sorry guys, I can be a jerk but I get so mad about getting made fun of for liking baseball that I take it out on other sports fans. I will make fun of NASCAR and basketball fans even though in my free time I pull out and read the sports section of the newspaper, including basketball and I watch maybe three races a year. I will work on not making fun of you guys!

  • OMG Yes, I live in Calif now (raised in NC and Fla) people think I’m nuts, cars that only turn left, its a idiot redneck, 4 pound beer belly & snaggled tooth sport. GOD that drives me nuts, I tell them well look at me I have all my teeth and I’m very fit. I tell them go to a race, I’ve actually changed a couple of them, they will atleast acknowledge it now. Most of the time I just ignore them. You know people that don’t like Nascar, they just do not know what they are missing..But its H*ll being a Nascar fan in Calif.

  • I know what you mean, I live in a suburb of Detroit, and there seems to be noone that likes NASCAR. I do get made fun of and people try to irritate me and say its not a sport and ask me why I think it is. And I just simply answer them if they dont like it I dont car. I do so they need to get over it.

  • I wasn’t a big NASCAR fan when I was in school so I never had that problem. Now, the people that know me could care less even though most of them aren’t into racing all that much. I wear my Jimmie shirts, jacket and hats all the time so everybody knows wgere I stand. I have a lot of other interests also, I mean up here you have to find things to do to get you from November to February. Racing in big in much of Wisconsin and there are a lot of local dirt tracks but that is bigger than NASCAR, for the most part.

  • DUDE OH MY GOD SAME HERE!

I live in Philadelphia, that’s as far from a racing town you can get. I swear to god it pisses me off. I gett made fun of all the time. I mean, I am a huge football and basketball fan and all people think I do is sit inside and watch cars go in circles. There is this one kid who was my friend and then I told him I like NASCAR and all of a sudden he hates me. Pathetic.

I respond with nothing. I ignore it. Those idiots will never understand.

  • Once I was reading a NASCAR magazine on the bus I take to work and two women sitting across the aisle from me were laughing and rolling their eyes. I didn’t say anything. I was trying to convince a friend to watch the Daytona 5 with me and he said NASCAR was boring…though he’s never watched it before. Other than that most of my circle enjoys NASCAR. Not quite as much as I do though. I too am from the North and there are several sports bars in my area and they are always packed on race day.

  • I live in North Carolina…..you get made fun of if you DON’T like NASCAR….LOL! We have a NHL, NBA, AND NFL team….The Panthers are accepted….but if you’re a BobCats or Hurricanes fan you will be made fun of. I did work in Bowling Green KY for about a month in 1998….got made fun of there. Some kind of horse race was big there???? Some kind of derby or something….I thought it sounded crazy myself. LOL.

  • Always. Some of my co workers are “football” jocks(2 played college ball,1 was a pro golfer,3 were track and fielders ,1 baseball player) so I take ribbing all the time. All 8 of us went to a NASCAR experiance driving adventure and 6 of us run at the same time.Well I had the fastest clocked time and thats all that was said from there.

  • Oh my goodness, yes! I live In south eastern MA, and i do get made fun of. Your right, its all about other sports. Sadly my school isnt even about sports…its about music. =[. but i try to ignore it. I do wear my NASCAR shirts ever once and a while. I cant wait for Daytona, gonna be awesome. Hopefully Dale Jr. will have a good year! lol

  • Nope, I never get made fun of. Just ignore the people who make fun of you and say it is a way of life you would not understand.

Proudly wear your numbers, talk about nascar and support you driver. You will always have a place here and will never get made fun of.

I can’t wait until February. Nascar starts!

  • All the time. I usually get one of two things thrown at me about NASCAR. It’s a ” REDNECK ” sport or, ” All they do is drive around in circles. ”

It is surprising ,since I live in Ohio, but there is a large number of people here who give NASCAR no credit at all. My usual response is to tell them that I’m not asking them to watch, or like NASCAR. So why do they feel the need to put me down for enjoying it?

  • tell them they just aren’t bright enough to to understand all the strategies and nuances of NASCAR. tell them you’re sorry that you’re not narrow minded enough to believe a sport must involve a ball or stick. and then give them Earnest Hemmingway’s famous quote.
“there are only 3 sports, mountain climbing, bull fighting, and auto racing. all the rest are merely games.”

  • No, because most people who lives in my town loves NASCAR and if an asshole says “NASCAR is fake” then a couple of people would team up on that asshole and teach him an lesson. yeah, NASCAR fans stick together but if the drivers are rivals, it’s rare to see them team up lol

  • Yes, absolutely. I only let my good friends know I love it. My friends are always like, Why are you watching that crap?! I live in the heart of Nascar country and I almost never meet people who are into it surprisingly enough. I grew up 5 miles from Marinsville Speedway and hated the sport myself until 6 years ago.

  • I’m a born and bred South Carolinian. Nobody here makes fun of you for liking NASCAR. In fact, I think we’re required to like it. : )
If small-minded people make fun of you, don’t sweat it. They’re the ones who are missing out – not you.

I think fluffy would say “they just have hurt feelings”. I miss him. : (

  • “I don’t give a damn crap about your opinions about Nascar, if it’s the 2nd most watched sport in America, you’re the odd man.” That’s what I’ll say, but mostly they don’t know Nascar here but they don’t make fun of it. Just once.

  • Go Jr………I watch Nascar because it makes me happy……sounds to me as if the others have a problem………..refuse to put up with their crap………its their problem…..not yours……………Im an adult and you will find as you mature that you care less and less wut others think about your life……you are the one who is living it………….88 rock the house.

  • Not so much. I get teased more due to the driver of my choice (Jeff Gordon). Lots of my friends like to rib me and say things about my driver. I stand up to them. But they do it just to get a rise out of me. Not many Jeff Gordon fans here in Oregon. But I know that they do exist!!

  • Occasionally it happens. Usually I just say “You don’t like it, go f*** yourself and leave me the hell alone.” or something along those lines. Lots of NASCAR fans here in Texas, though. It’s pretty rare.

  • Yep, most everybody I know is into NFL. I tell them, “Oh Well! You probably wouldn’t understand it anyway”. They should not judge what they do not know. It’s their loss…I wear my shirts proudly, wherever I want. I am proud to be a NASCAR fan!

  • ALL THE TIME. I live in plainfield about 20 min from chicagoland and i get ranked on all the time by people in school. I don’t care though it’s their loss. i just tell them to f off and grow a pair of kahunas.

  • Sometimes but it’s all good. All I have to do is mention the list of felon’s in the stick and ball sport’s. They usually don’t have a retort. Glad to see we have another fan, welcome aboard.

  • I just laugh, tell them it is the ONLY SPORT!!! Everything else is a game.

Then I kind of act like Bill The Cat.

    Just my 2 cents.

  • All the time but I don’t care, their loss for not watching it. There were NO other Nascar fans at my school. People that tell me not to watch it can suck it.

  • Back in grad school, yeah, I got the occasional eye-rolling. Once I went back home to SW VA, though, I had no problems. Just about everybody here loves NASCAR.

  • Southern California is not racing country, so I get made fun of a lot. I take it all in stride, though. I’ve been watching NASCAR since I was little.

  • Answer hidden due to its low rating

I just tell everyone it happens to be on during wash day and I get a few good laughs thinking about the inane behavior of those who cannot live without it
