Does anyone know of a reputable breeders or rescues in the New England area?

I am looking for golden retriever pups. Preferably a male and I don’t really care about the color. I want this pup to be bred for therapy work… I need him to have that type of temperament and personality. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue is based in Massachusetts and adopts out dogs to the six New England States. They have an excellent reputation. If they don’t have what you want, they can refer you to a responsible, ethical golden breeder.

Personally, if you want a pup for therapy work, adopt a toddler whose personality is known. With a puppy, you really don’t know for sure what you’re getting. Most of the dogs handled by rescues come from families that can’t keep them for a variety of reasons – divorce, moving, allergies, economic, owner died…. The staff is skilled at assessing temperament and can help you choose the best dog for the job.

We have several therapy dogs (4, to be exact) and our best therapy dog, hands down, is a dog we got as a rescue at age 10. For the past two years she has been deaf and blind but was still the favorite dog of many of our most profoundly disabled patients. She has a sweetness about her and a way of molding herself against people that just warms their hearts and puts them at ease.

She is now 15 and we just retired her from therapy work as her health has taken a serious downturn. We don’t want any more of our patients to get too attached to her as she is clearly in the last phase of her life. Point is, older dogs can make exceptional therapy dogs.
