Help with a career in internal medicine/endocrinology?

I am a junior in high school and I’ve been spending a lot of time worrying and getting stressed out about college- mostly because I have no idea what to major in or what to do with my life.

I’ve had type one diabetes for thirteen years now and I think I want to go into a diabetes-related career, but I don’t know if I’m “smart” enough. I only have a 3.6 unweighted (3.8 weighted) GPA and I haven’t taken the SATs yet. I’m in the top 25% of my 7-student class, whereas the rest of my honors homeroom is in the top 1 or 2 percent.

Anyways, I initially wanted to be an endocrinologist, but I know I’m not smart enough or motivated enough for that. I think I’d like to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner in endocrinology or as a diabetes educator. How do I go about this? What do I major in? What is the coursework like? I’m so lost.

  • Focus on keeping your grades up now, volunteering, and extracurriculars. Get into a decent college and work on PreMed, if that’s your dream. If you find that you aren’t doing well, you can start looking at other things, like nursing. However, nursing is also very competitive and not a cakewalk to get into right now; those GPA minimums are just that, minimums. If you are flunking out of BIO 101, you could have problems getting into anything that’s mid or upper level medical.

But, let’s not go there. Get into college and see how you do. Some students flourish in college because of the freedom. You may find that not having teachers breathing down your neck every second and not having such bs busywork as high school is good for you.

So, basically, don’t stress about it yet. Worry about getting into college right now. Cross the other bridges when you come to them.
