How bug are clothes moths?

ok, I know this might be a silly question but I have never seen these moths, how big are they? Would I be aware of their presence before I see a sweater all chewed up?

Also, my boyfriend brought home a sweater he was storing at his parent’s home, when he went to wear it he saw there were some moth holes, so we don’t know if this happened in his parent’s home or at my apartment.

Let me clarify that I just moved into my apt, it is pretty new, dressers are fairly new, I cleaned everything before moving in and lined the drawers and shelves with gift wrapping paper (upside down, white side up, just because I didn’t have anything else) put pieces of soap (heard moths hate soap) and some hanging lavender cartons.

Another question is: He brought this “infested” sweater, what happens if I put it with other sweater now, if it possible to “infest” the others too??
I know I have to wash it first and I will but in the meantime ….? (it’s not laundry day just yet),

Please help!!!!! I am sooo freaked out by these moths!!! Are they invisible or visible enemies?

  • The moths are just ordinary little brown moths not more than half an inch across. There is no need to worry every time you see a small brown moth however. Clothes moths have a very distinctive fluttery flight unlike most other moths, almost as if they were using their wings to help them to do big jumps. It is not the moths themselves that do the damage but the larvae from their eggs when they hatch. So if you just moved into your apartment there would hardly have been time for the damage to have occurred there. By the time you have seen the damage the larvae will have gone, so don’t worry. The moths like to lay their eggs on real wool, so if you want to be quite sure your woolens are safe pop them into plastic bags before you store them. Clothes moths are much less common than they used to be as there are far fewer clothes made of wool
People use to put “moth balls” among their clothes, but they smelled dreadful. Many scented plants such a southernwood and cinnamon bark will deter moths, but I don’t think lavender does.

Frantically cleaning everywhere isn’t necessary and won’t actually make any difference. All you have to do is to make it impossible for a moth to have access to a your woolen garments. But don’t worry – as I said they aren’t common any more. After all, you haven’t come across any moth damage in your life before have you?
