how can i become a pediatrician (classes & schools) ?

I would like to become a pediatrician. But i would have to go to a community college first to obtain my A.A or A.S before i go to a year university. I am looking for community colleges preferably in Florida or in New York. And i only know miami-dade community college but i would like to keep my options open. So if someone can give me a list of community colleges and university’s that majors on pediatrics than i would be really grateful thank you.

  • In order to become a pediatrician you need to go to medical school. It’s a professional school, which means that first you have to complete – years of undergraduate study before you can enter medical school. [And during that time you have to complete all the prerequisite courses that the med school(s) that you want to apply to require you to take – which usually includes a lot of biology plus chemistry plus some English, math, physics, etc.]

There are two types of med schools, MD programs and DO programs. What they teach and what you can do afterwards is almost identical, but MD programs are more common and tend to be somewhat more competitive. Here is a list of MD programs with the average stats of accepted students: http://www.washington.edu/uaa/advising/downloads/g…

Each med school lists its prerequisite courses (i.e. those courses that you would have to complete in your – years of “pre-med” undergraduate study) on its website, see for instance http://admissions.med.ufl.edu/admission-requiremen… at the University of Florida or http://school.med.nyu.edu/md-admissions/how-apply/… at NYU.

So what you would have to do is the following:

EITHER complete at least two years at a four-year college/university and then apply to med school during your third year, OR complete two years at a two-year college/university, then transfer to a four-year college/university and apply to med school during your third year (i.e. during your first year at the four-year college/university)

After that, four years of med school. During the fourth year of med school, apply to pediatrics residency programs.

After that, three years of pediatrics residency. [Which means that you’ll learn, practice (with supervision), and study in the pediatrics department of a large hospital.]

After that, if you pass all the exams, you would be a board certified pediatrician.

So in total you are looking at – years of education/training after high school.
