How do formula 1 cars get a speed burst?

I remember watching an F1 race and the announcers said the driver could hit a button 1 or 2 times a race for a burst of speed. I know its not nitrous. What is it called?

  • Kinetic Energy Recovery System or KERS. There are two types, battery(electrical) or flywheel(mechanical). Waste energy or waste heat is converted and stored in an onboard battery and used during the race. While both systems can be used the battery system is presently used by F1 teams.

Edit: The KERS is used quite often simultaneously with the DRS. The Drag Reduction System. This is when the rear wing on the car is “opened” reducing drag allowing the car to move faster. KERS can be used anywhere on the track during the race while DRS can only be used in certain area’s or zones.

  • KERS will give you about 80 bhp for around six seconds a lap. DRS will not really give you a burst a speed, but rather let you reach a higher top speed due to the reduction in downforce and drag.

  • Or it could be DRS drag reduction system

  • It’s KERS or DRS
