  • Sewage treatment should be a three-step process, although some treatment plants stop at one or two.

    Primary treatment: screening, skimming, and precipitation of heavy particles
    Secondary treatment: Digestion of organic matter to reduce the oxygen demand
    Tertiary treatment: Removal of the nutrients (N & P compounds) to limit eutrophication.
