How does CRV work? Per Can, per weight? Do I have to separate?

I just moved to California and I wanted to know how the CRV refund systems works.

My relocate agent told me that you usually throw the bottles to the big plastic garbage can at your apartment complex and that it is NOT usual to bring the cans and bottles to the recycling center (only poor people would do that). Is this really true? I’m from Europe and there all people are used to bring bottles and cans back.

If you do bring the bottles back how does that work?

Am I allowed to compress the bottles and cans if I want to recycle them at a recycle center? Do I get the refund per can/bottle or per weight? Do I have to separate cans, 5-cent CRV plastic bottles and 10-cent CRV plastic bottles?

Do you normally wait until you have a big amount of cans/bottles or go there whenever you come by?

Thanks and sorry for any mistakes in my English,

Katy

  • http://www.ca.gov/ is the place to start.

It is not “poor folk” who recycle their cans, many recycling centers will pay cash per pound of cans. Some of those companies do not care if the cans are crushed, some do care because people will try to pad their weight by stuffing trash into the cans.

Bottles you may be able to return to the store for the deposit value, it depends on the store and how the state law gets interpreted. Just ask the cashier next time you go to the store.

Saving up the cans until you have quite a few is often the best way to make the trips to the metal recyclers more cost effective. Saving up bottles may not work very well due to the fact that stores can limit how much money they refund. Plus bottles tend to be a bother to store in large quantities..
